#9 would you please stop ranting, not all SEO's guarantee a no. 1 position. SEO can be very helpfull to understand why something is wrong, technically spoken.

I am an SEO and you won't see me advertising no.1 positions.

The colour scheme - I can read the site ok.. I don't think personal taste should be involved in a review of someone's site.. it is his after all (you either have good taste or you don't - or you just rip off other people's colour schemes)

As for 'tabular data', I think it would be wise to avoid tables all together and in doing so:
1. learn more about xhtml and css
2. have more fine grain control of your grids
3. keep your xhtml clean and consistent

Your code is pretty clean although there is still some indentation missed; an example of a really beautiful piece of xhtml is the source code for this home page:

remote-exploit.org [remote-exploit.org]

Ignore the guy ranting about SEO. Don't hire someone to do it for you - learn it and do it yourself, that seomoz link was meant to be a good introduction to SEO since they have a few articles that they provide to the public for free; and they know what they're talking about.

Good luck improving your website =)

It has nothing to do with good or bad taste, (jumping into conclusions there aren't you?) it has to do with contrast.
Reading from a screen is much more difficult than printed text. Especially when eye sight is getting less with the years.

In webdesign, you only have a short moment to convince a visitor that your site is worth staying. Don't make it difficult for him to read, or he will probably never find out that it might be worthwhile.

For colorschemes, one does not have to rip off some one elses. There are plenty free services on the net to find a good set for your site. Even some that generate them by sending in a picture you want to use:

Hiya all,

Excellent responses... I'm glad I posted here!

Okay, so the AJAX to load my pages isn't going to work in this case. No worries, easy fix. The question is: what would be the best way to load the pages without using JavaScript? iframes? I wouldn't mind using iframes, but I've read that frames are bad to use in general. Is this true?

I'd prefer not to have a copy of the main layout for every page when all I'm changing is the one div's contents. I'm worried about bandwidth usage and the scalability of my web site if I don't use JavaScript or frames to change only certain contents of the page. Should I even worry about bandwidth usage?

About the formatting of my XHTML: Haha, I wasn't even really trying to organize it. I guess I'm just so used to formatting real code that I just naturally organized it somewhat. I'll take note to go through the code and properly indent it in the future.

I've submitted my web site to all of the main search engines (Google, Yahoo, Dogpile, MSN... did I miss any?). Unfortunately, it still doesn't seem to be showing up. I'll take a look at that SEO thing. Don't worry about me hiring someone to do it for me; I'm too cheap to pay someone to do something that I can do by myself with a little learning. :-P

Okay, so... checklist of changes:
1) Use something other than JavaScript to load the web pages.
2) Change the font and color scheme of the site for better appearance and contrast.
3) Look in to changing the tables over to divs.
4) Reformat the XHTML to meet XHTML standards.
5) Look in to SEO.

Am I missing anything?

As people have said, move away from the javascript. Just use nice html and css. It's good to learn, search engines will see it, it will load for everyone.

As far as fonts, color schemes, etc - what you have is ok. Not great, sure change it, but some of this other stuff is more important. And you can and will change this stuff again from time to time.

You do not need to submit your website to search engines. As you have seen, it doesn't matter anyway. You won't show up until you get an outside link. Get yourself into Yahoo's directory, or some other portfolio directory on the web (that already shows up in search engines). Get a link from your university's web page or that company in Houston you work for.

What you need are a couple of links to start you off. Then you need to fix your code (move away from javascript, check your tags and text, few other things), and you'll come up for "Randy Olson" searches in no time.

#16 - So I just need to get other popular sites to link to me and I will show up on search engines?

Also, to critique my own web site, I've noticed that it doesn't have the kind of content that will keep visitors coming back on a regular basis. I've been considering my options for a section to add that updates regularly (once or twice a week or so) that may keep the visitors coming back for more. What do you guys and gals think?

I'll have to agree with toontje about contrast. It needs some color to make it more interesting. It's easy to navigate. I like the rounded corners and shadowing.

RhieverFeb 16, 4:12pm
sicjoy - I think you just viewed the latest version that I put out today. I changed a few things around as per the recommendations in this thread. You think it's lacking in color now? Hmmm...

That being said, the latest version is up on the web now. Comments and suggestions on the latest version, please! :-]

Yeah. You took away that purple colour.. That was so gay! Now it looks a much better... I would find that the layout would be absolute better if you removed the gray shadow at the bottom.. And if possible, change the menu text colour from purple to blue or black or any other colour :P

The idea you have to come up with yourself!
