| Rhiever | Feb 13, 8:03pm | Hey everyone,
I just got into the web developing side of things a couple months ago and decided to start up my own personal web site. Being that it isn't a full-fledged web site yet, I'm still hosting it on a free host for now. What you see now is my "initial release," of sorts, of my web site.
I welcome any comments or constructive criticism - what you like, what you don't like (and suggested ways to fix it), and so on.
Thanks!
Randy |

Donīt make commercial for it on the StumbleUpon forums, it is called Spam.. I donīt think StumbleUpon is responsible for compensating the web site for the total destructions of the good reviews you had on your sites...
It looks nice.... The Menu looks nice, except the White and Black in it.. The "Randy Olson" could easily be cut and changed to someone else, because it looks bad.. The purple background sucks, it looks extremely bad..
The gray box with "Project, Describtion and Download" looks cool.
The graphic isnīt exactly nice, but it sure is easily navigated though... |

Why loading pages with Javascript?
Next to that, the looks of the site could be altered, it realy looks bad. |

It does look bad. It is almost impossible to focus on the text. I think Randy is better of with an honest review than some half baked onces.
There is nothing wrong with making mistakes, there is with repairing them half. ;) |

| Rhiever | Feb 14, 5:51am | Hello all,
First off, thank you for the responses. I truly appreciate them.
Being that I am newish to web design, it doesn't surprise me if the overall look and feel of my web site isn't very attractive.
I used JavaScript to load my pages since I wanted to play around with AJAX and, from my understanding, it's more efficient (bandwidth and load-wise) to load them that way. I've considered using iframes, but I've been told that frames are bad.
I also have plans on making a fancier title bar for the page; the black text is just a place holder until I can get the patience to sit down in Photoshop and make something.
Some of you got more specific, some didn't. Being that I work mostly as a software debugger and I like asking questions, here my questions come for you all:
To those who liked the look of the web site:
1) What did you like about it? The color combination, the layout, the font, etc.?
2) Was there anything that didn't fit in?
To those who didn't like it:
1) What did you not like about it?
2) How do you suggest I fix it?
3) Did you like any parts of the web site?
Also, for everyone: It seems most of you commented on the coloring, fonts, etc. of my web site. Is this to say that the overall structure of the web site looks good and it just needs to be recolored and respaced?
Also, I couldn't seem to get the valign to work on my tables. Any ideas as to why? I'm thinking it has something to do with XHTML 1.0. |

| moookid | Feb 14, 6:39am | Don't use tables - use divs with XHTML + CSS
it's all on the w3schools website |

Don't worry, my first sites were awfull. Unfortunatly for a (to long period) people told me they looked fine, just to save my feelings. I'd rather had some usefull tips, even if it meant to start all over again.

Don't use javascript to load or display important parts of a website / page you make them unavailable for those who haven't got or won't use it.
To those who didn't like it:
1) What did you not like about it?
As already mentioned, the colors, the use of javascript, the same title on all pages (hint hint)
The centered headers compared to the left aligned text.
The dark color for the links.
2) How do you suggest I fix it?
Have a look at appealing websites, there are plenty. Look why they did what they did, and try to see your site through the eye of your visitors.
3) Did you like any parts of the web site?
Yes i did. The clean coding, the effort made and the clear structure.
In general:
Stop using javascript to load your pages, learn about usability and color and i am sure you can build better pages then i do. ;)
Addition:
To illustrate there is something wrong, just imagine some one comes to one of your pages without visiting the index or without javascript, this is what i see:

@moookid, are we talking about the same site? I don't see exessive tables used for design purpose only!
If you are talking about the pages 'projects' and 'flash' there is a propper use, it is tabulair data so a table is fine. |

#4 SEO? Stop that shit.. Take a read...
No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.
Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a "special relationship" with Google, or advertise a "priority submit" to Google. There is no priority submit for Google. In fact, the only way to submit a site to Google directly is through our Add URL page or through the Google Sitemaps program, and you can do this yourself at no cost whatsoever.
I think the colour simply sucks, the only thing in design that I like is the Menu :D |

There is no excuse for (only) using JS to load text content. It's horrible. I would have immediately left the site (I use NoScript) had I not known I was digging deeper. At least put a NOSCRIPT tag in there informing people to enable JavaScript. |
