you might try this site that has a pretty good run down of various sites that offer free hosting... some with ads, some without.
free-webhosts.com [free-webhosts.com]
As mentioned above, I would be leery of the free hosting without ads. They need to re-capture the "free" that they gave away, so you or your client (whoever has the email on the account) will be getting email offers to upgrade the hosting. And, as mentioned by ben76..., there is no guarantee that you'll get to keep the "free" hosting. If you are using a database to run the site, make sure you have daily backups, so if you need to move to a new location you will be able to with less setup time.
If you haven't given your client a warning regarding all the pitfalls of free hosting, you might try that to see if they'll realize the down-time, domain change, etc. that "free" will cause.
Good Luck,
Dan O. |

It is a lot with this companies now, they all scam... They usually set up a company in some country like Cyprus, Greece or some place that is pretty far away where they operate... Then they usually manage their company from England or United States....
They offer some sort of service that needs to be payed for, either one-time payment or subscription... I heard thousands of stories from people that they signed up to a site with a subscription, then they got banned and the company keep the subscriber from cancelling his monthly pay to the company.. They try to isolate the buyer from being able to unsubcribe...
Often, they will have to cancel their PayPal account, because the owner suddenly gets "Unreachable" and if someone manages to talk to him, he says something like "Subscription can´t be cancelled" or "The company who takes care of our financial is currently not avaible, please return later.."
It is more common this days.. I know people who lost 10k.. So an advise, if you want to spend money on a site, avoid PayPal and subscribtions,.. Don´t spend money on a site if you´re not ready to lose it.. |

And if they won't listen to you about the benefits of a competent host, they are likely very difficult to deal with.
I have never used a 'free host' that was worthwhile, and I never expect to see one. Most of the *paid* hosting companies have problems, be it user interface, features, etc.
The best advice I can give you is to say it is worth it to pay for hosting with a respectable company. |

| timbury | Jan 23, 7:12pm | | @penman2 I have used Hostway for 2 years and I'm satisfied. I got a deal that works for me. $150 USD/year for 500GB disk, 1500GB/mo bandwidth, 1000 emails, 1000 subdir domains, more. Very good siteway host control interface. Only thing I don't like is I only get 1 MySQL DB. I can add more for a few $$ per month. But I have a dozen separate sites in the same db. I don't know why any host would offer free account without ads. How will they make money? |

| Sponsor | jyodis | Jan 23, 9:29pm | | Since penman2 brought up the idea of hosting with your ISP, it doesn't hurt for me to add: don't host with your ISP. Their hosting stinks. Good general rule (yes some exceptions I suppose, might be). |

I already pay over the average for my ISP, but the reliability and service is superb (winners of many awards and strongly recommended by other users), so the principle of paying a bit more for these things is well established.
16: Again, interesting. Why do you think that is ? |

| ben76213 | Jan 24, 9:59am | | Jyodis, what the fuck is that bullshit you talk? AnswerMan says the client is willing to pay for the site One-Time or free... Clearly, he doesn´t want to pay for a montly service that hooks himself up... He probably is a starter and doesn´t want to subscribe to a hosting and find himself wasting a lot of money without seeing the web page.... |

You don't have to make a long term commitment to a host. You pay by month in most cases, with no setup fee for the type of package this client should likely get.
We're talking $9.
So for somewhere in the $4.99 - $14.99 range, this mystery client will not get a real host for his business venture?
You talk of wasting money? You waste money by wasting your time setting up hosting with a 'free' web host. You always, always end up switching to a real host. With better support, better features, better interface and admin control.
I think you need to calm down. There is no need to spout obscenities. By all means, tell AnswerMan how reliable free hosting is, all the benefits he'll see both short and long term, and tell him which host he should use. |

| ben76213 | Jan 24, 1:07pm | I have said in previous messages that it is not reliable to host with a free host since they might switch to pay and then you have to pay to keep your web page..
I think AnswerMan´s client is completely right... There should be one-time payment.. Not having to pay each month... Of course, the system is based on subscription and might keep that way, but he is defently smart... One-time payment is nicer and better then subscription.....
Wow.. Do you get Admin control??? Is that a benefit? To control your own web page? Support? Yeah Right... They are good at telling you they suck in a nice way!
You seem to know some shit about web pages but really the words is just straight from your hosting service... |
