that's why i run a check in the file manager in my site every day.
however, i am surprised that the webhost's system never picked up on a sudden unexpected surge of traffic (if that is what was happening)?

I wasnīt the one who was hacked.. This was a guy who owned a blog and probably still does :P Apparently, the auto-generator of links that the hackers had put in, didnīt increase the traffic...

Splog A >>> links to fake page on hijacked site B >>> which fake page has been redirected to a pharma site selling OxyContin.

The blog acted as a middle-man and the search engines recognised that the company who sold OxyContin were linked by many pages.. From what the owner of the blog described, the whole page was blank. Nothing, but there was an auto-generator of links to cell phone signals, porno and medical health sites. From what I can think of is that all sites that were in that Auto-Generator list got an increase in the search engines ranking..

I guess that the search engines suddenly thought the company who sold OxiContin, as stated in the example, got a high amount of traffic suddenly, which led to their sudden increase in search engine ranking....

The owner of the blog also tells that this was made on the Christmas Eve, and the problem was fixed until Christmas day, and he got the Auto-Generator removed from his site.. I guess that on Christmas Eve there are not that many who are in on the internet, and the short time might not have made any large amount of internet consumers to visit the company who sells OxiContin...

then i suppose the answer (apart from making one's site more secure of course) would be to generate a recent activities log which is run whenever and say, for example, a script which searches for key activities within it

@toontje - You were absolutely correct about page rank! I've seen a significant up tick in Google traffic since fixing the duplicate meta tags, yet Google Toolbar still reports my front page as PR 0. Strangely, it indicates that my about page has PR 4.

Then i would suggest you have a look at the front page. There might be something wrong in text - coding balance, or the content over all.

Internal link structure might be a problem to. Have a look at it and remember there has to be a flow in your site. Going from one page, and returning to it.

Next to that make sure your home page / front page has good incoming links.

I'm using Google's Webmaster Tools: It reports nothing wrong with the front page. I did find one broken link, but it was on a secondary page.

As far as link structure is concerned: Every page has a header that links back to the front page, a primary navigation bar that links to important pages, and secondary navigation, on the side, that links to every other aspect of the site.

I've accumulated some good links: DMOZ, Musicmoz, and other music focused sites and directories.

So perhaps it's as you say, that Google hasn't updated the database that the Google Toolbar queries when you visit my front page.

If there is nothing wrong with the front page, PR might well be not transported and visible. Just wait a few weeks and see from there.

But just don't wait and sit still. Build on your sites links, content etc. ;)
